Mayor targeted for assassination in two weeks: “These are difficult times for me and my family”

San Bernardo Mayor Christopher White said he and his family are going through difficult times after an alleged plan to assassinate him became known, but he vowed to keep confronting organized crime.

In these difficult times for me, my family and those around me, I want to say that organized crime cannot win: we will move forward with greater strength and conviction.

In a video published by Socialist Senator Juan Luis Castro, White thanked the people who had supported him. “In these difficult times for me, my family and those around me, I want to say that organized crime cannot win: we will move forward with greater strength and conviction,” he said.

White also said he had received broad support from people who want Chile to improve. He specifically thanked Castro and others who had stood by him, adding that their backing gave him strength to continue.

I have received multiple expressions of support, because we are the majority who want Chile to do better. I thank Juan Luis Castro at this time, as well as many others who have stood by us. These things truly give us strength to move forward.

Castro said he had accompanied the mayor, describing White as an official who had taken a firm stand against organized crime and now faced serious threats. “Chile cannot give up a single inch to those who seek to intimidate its authorities,” Castro said, calling the situation unacceptable.
