Maziotis to Leave Prison on September 14, Saying He Will Never Be ‘Reformed’

The countdown has begun for Nikos Maziotis, who is due to walk out of Domokos prison on September 14 after completing his sentence. His release has already unsettled Greek authorities because his public statements do not appear to renounce the activity that led to his conviction.

Maziotis was convicted of participating in the Revolutionary Struggle, an organization authorities identified as terrorist, along with a series of serious offenses including an explosion, attempted murder and robbery. He has spent 14 years in prison, while a further six years were credited through work, bringing his total sentence served to 20 years.

His letters have drawn particular attention. Maziotis says judicial councils in Lamia rejected his applications for conditional release seven times. Among the reasons cited was that he had not been “reformed” or “morally improved.” His response was unequivocal: “That will not happen even in 1,000,000 years.” In another letter in 2025, he wrote: “Revolutionaries are not ‘reformed’ and do not ‘morally improve.’”

He also presents his political position as unchanged. Referring to current social and political conditions, Maziotis describes the struggle “against the state and capital” as “just,” “necessary” and “imperative.” In a statement marking anniversaries linked to the Revolutionary Struggle, he praised the group’s 2009 car-bomb attack against the Athens Stock Exchange and recalled its earlier warnings about the economic crisis and bailout memorandums.

The Anti-Terrorist Service is examining the content of his statements, especially passages that leave open the possibility of renewed activity. His release follows repeated changes to criminal and prison codes that, he argues, have increased sentences and actual time served.
