Mbappé makes World Cup history with second Golden Boot

Kylian Mbappé has etched his name in World Cup history by becoming the first player to secure the Golden Boot award twice. The French captain achieved this feat at the 2026 tournament, where he netted an impressive 10 goals across eight matches, narrowly edging out Lionel Messi in the top scorer race. This marks his second consecutive Golden Boot win, having also finished as the top scorer at the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

Mbappé's scoring prowess extends beyond this tournament. He is the first male player since Gerd Müller in 1970 to surpass double figures in World Cup goals. Furthermore, with 22 goals, he has now become the men's all-time leading scorer in the competition, surpassing Lionel Messi by one goal. Mbappé moved into the lead yesterday after scoring two goals in the bronze match, which France lost 6-4 to England.

While Mbappé celebrated his individual achievement, the 2026 World Cup title went to Spain, with captain Rodri recognized as the tournament's best player and awarded the Golden Ball. Lionel Messi, aiming for a record third Golden Ball, finished the competition with eight goals. Other notable scorers included England's Jude Bellingham and Norway's Erling Haaland with seven goals each, followed by France's Ousmane Dembele and England captain Harry Kane with six.
