Mechelse Poort intersection in Dendermonde enters penultimate phase, fully closed all week

Dendermonde's busiest intersection, Mechelse Poort, will undergo a complete closure for motorized traffic from Monday evening, August 17, through Sunday, August 23. This measure is necessary for the renewal of the intersection's central section, including its pavement, foundation, traffic light system, and associated works. The closure marks the penultimate phase of a comprehensive two-year project to redesign this critical junction.

During the closure, vehicles and heavier traffic will be rerouted via surrounding regional roads. Pedestrians and cyclists will continue to use the existing detour around the intersection. The works are part of a larger effort to transform Mechelse Poort, which has long been identified as a dangerous intersection on Flanders' list of black spots.

Upon completion, the redesigned Mechelse Poort is expected to be significantly safer. The project includes extensive landscaping with ample green spaces, the construction of wider bicycle paths, a dedicated bicycle bridge, and three new bicycle tunnels. The entire reconstruction project, which began in late August 2024, is slated for full completion by the end of this year.
