Medellín mayor ‘Fico’ Gutiérrez announces strategic alliance with FBI against transnational corruption and serious crime

Medellín Mayor Federico Gutiérrez has formalized a cooperation agenda with the FBI covering some of the most serious threats facing the city and the region: transnational public corruption, terrorism and the sexual exploitation of children and adolescents.

The agreement took shape during a meeting in Miami between Gutiérrez and Brett Skiles, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Miami office. Colombian diplomatic representatives and members of Medellín’s district administration also attended.

During the meeting, the Medellín administration handed the U.S. agency documentary evidence concerning alleged diversions of public resources and irregularities in the management of the city during previous administrations. Gutiérrez emphasized the importance of institutional support from the FBI and said the city had continued receiving evidence and key information after the meeting to strengthen ongoing investigations.

The mayor said the coordinated work aims to ensure that criminal and administrative responsibility is addressed by the competent authorities in both countries. Medellín government officials Manuel Villa Mejía and Nicolás Ríos Correa accompanied the presentation of operational and intelligence material to the U.S. delegation.

The FBI’s Miami field office confirmed that the meeting formally addressed a possible case of transnational public corruption. The agency said the talks sought to consolidate the exchange of strategic information and reaffirm the shared commitment to reducing criminal threats affecting communities in Colombia and regional security. Allen Pack, the FBI attaché for the Andean region at the U.S. Embassy in Bogotá, also helped coordinate the work in Colombia.
