Medellín prepares for historic 4.1-kilometer Independence Day military parade

Medellín is preparing for a significant military parade to mark Colombia's 216th Independence Day on July 20. The event, described as historic, will feature around 5,000 members of the military, police, and emergency services marching through the city.

The parade route spans 4.1 kilometers, starting at the Juan Pablo II aeropark and concluding at the Parque de los Pies Descalzos. To manage the event, authorities have planned a special security and mobility operation. Road closures are in effect from 7:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. along key routes like Carrera 70, Avenida Bolivariana, Avenida San Juan, and Carrera 58. Around 180 traffic agents will oversee traffic regulation.

The ceremony is set to be attended by the president-elect of Colombia, Abelardo de la Espriella. Its primary objective is to recognize the service of individuals dedicated to defending the nation, protecting citizens, and responding to emergencies. Participants will include units from the Army, Navy, Air Force, National Police, Medellín Fire Department, various relief organizations, mobility authorities, and public force veterans.

City officials are advising attendees to use public transport, arrive early, and follow the instructions of security and mobility personnel. Manuel Villa Mejía, the Secretary of Security and Coexistence, stated, "July 20 reminds us that Colombia has never renounced freedom and that this country has been built thanks to generations of men and women who chose to serve, work, and believe even in the most difficult times."
