Media and wildlife activists join health walk at Legon Botanical Gardens

Sports journalists and civil society representatives joined a bird walk at Ghana’s Legon Botanical Gardens as part of MTN Ghana’s Sustainability Month.

MTN Ghana organised the event, called “Bird Walk with the Media and CSO’s,” with the Ghana Wildlife Society. Participants began with an aerobics session before setting out on a walk lasting nearly three hours.

Dr Sandra Owusu-Gyamfi, executive director of the Ghana Wildlife Society, urged Ghanaians to reduce their reliance on plastics and use more environmentally friendly alternatives at home, in offices and in public spaces. She warned that plastic waste, including microplastics, threatens marine life and the wider ecosystem.

Plastic waste, particularly microplastics, poses a serious threat to marine life and the wider ecosystem.

Owusu-Gyamfi also highlighted birds as important species whose freedom and way of life can offer lessons about nature and peaceful coexistence. She encouraged participants to develop greater appreciation for birds and other wildlife, saying biodiversity protection is a shared responsibility.

MTN Acting General Manager of Sustainability Georgina Asare Fiagbenu described the walk as an opportunity to reconnect with nature and strengthen relationships among colleagues and media partners. Corporate Communications Senior Manager Efua Falconer said the company wanted its media partners to stay informed about emerging developments and participate in initiatives promoting sustainability and responsible environmental practices.
