Mediterranean Games: Katerina Kontochristopoulou wins gold in épée fencing

Katerina Kontochristopoulou has claimed the gold medal in individual épée fencing at the Mediterranean Games in Taranto, marking a triumphant end to her participation in the event.

The Greek fencer demonstrated exceptional skill from the outset, achieving a perfect record in the pool stage with three victories. She defeated Sara Amr Hosny of Egypt 5-3, Constance Catarsi of France 5-1, and Nouran B'chir of Tunisia 5-4.

Kontochristopoulou faced a tough challenge in the round of 16 against Croatia's Doria Blažić, ultimately winning a close match 15-13. Her performance escalated in the quarterfinals, where she secured a decisive 15-8 victory over Italy's Francesca Palumbo, guaranteeing her a spot on the podium.

The path to the final saw her compete against Spain's Ariadna Tucker in the semifinals. Kontochristopoulou took an early lead and maintained control, fending off her opponent's attempts to rally and winning 15-11. In the final, she met Sara Amr Hosny of Egypt for a second time, reaffirming her dominance with a 15-13 victory to clinch the gold medal and secure a major success for Greek fencing.
