Meduca presents new complaint over alleged fake diploma network; teacher cases now total 210

The Ministry of Education (Meduca) in Panama has once again sounded the alarm on academic fraud, presenting a new complaint to the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office. This latest action targets an alleged network involving around 80 individuals who are accused of attempting to infiltrate the national education system using counterfeit diplomas. The ministry’s legal team is pursuing charges of document forgery, offenses against public administration, and illicit association.

The Ministry of Education (Meduca) presented a new complaint to the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office of the Public Ministry for the alleged commission of the crimes of forgery of documents, against public administration and illicit association to commit a crime, in a case that would involve approximately 80 people who would have entered or attempted to enter the educational system with allegedly false titles.

Preliminary findings suggest these fraudulent diplomas were attributed to an educational institution in Chiriquí province and were used to inflate scores in teacher recruitment competitions, thereby securing coveted positions. Meduca's ongoing verification processes, particularly through the Online Vacancy Process (Provel), have uncovered a disturbing pattern of irregularities, including the suspected sale of positions and the involvement of public officials in these corrupt practices.

This new complaint adds to the growing number of cases, with Meduca having already filed approximately 12 previous complaints related to fake diplomas, totaling 210 cases involving educators. The current investigation spans several school regions, including Bocas del Toro, Chiriquí, the Ngäbe Buglé region, Darién, and Herrera. At least 30 teachers have already been suspended, and disciplinary proceedings are underway to remove them from the permanent registry of eligible candidates, preventing future participation in the system.

These documents would have been used with the objective of obtaining a higher score in the teaching competitions and securing a vacancy within the national education system.

Meduca officials have reiterated their commitment to transparency and the purging of corruption within the educational sector.
