Meloni says her government is Italy’s longest-serving, crediting a united coalition

Giorgia Meloni celebrated what she called a historic record on social media: her government has become the longest-serving in the history of the Italian Republic.

She described the milestone with gratitude and “a strong sense of responsibility,” arguing that stability should not be displayed as a record for its own sake. In her view, it gives a country the ability to plan, make decisions, keep its commitments and command respect.

Meloni said her government had worked to increase employment, reduce unemployment, support families and businesses, strengthen security, manage public finances seriously and restore Italy’s weight and credibility internationally. She acknowledged that results had been achieved, but added that much remained to be done.

Stability is not a record to display, but the condition that allows a nation to plan, decide, keep its commitments and earn respect.

The prime minister insisted that the stability did not belong to one person. She attributed it to a coalition that had governed for four years with a shared vision and had chosen to remain together “not against someone, but to carry out a project for Italy.” She also said it was no coincidence that the three longest-serving governments in republican history were all center-right administrations.

Meloni linked the government’s longevity to the confidence Italians gave it in 2022. She said that trust had never been treated as a blank cheque and would not be taken for granted. Next year, she said, the government would return to voters with an account of what it had done, what remained unfinished and its vision for the future. Voters would then decide whether it deserved to continue.
