Meloni Slams Schlein Over Ranucci Case Remarks, Demands Apology

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has sharply criticized opposition leader Elly Schlein regarding her statements after an intimidation attempt at the home of journalist Sigfrido Ranucci. Meloni accused Schlein of constructing a narrative of insinuations and casting shadows on Italy on an international stage.

Meloni recalled Schlein's past remarks from October 2025, where she expressed solidarity with Ranucci after a bomb was found at his home, stating that "democracy is at risk, freedom of expression is at risk when the far-right is in government." Meloni contrasted this with Schlein's later statement in July 2026, where she claimed to have never linked the government to the perpetrators.

"For months, she and other left-wing figures have built a story of allusions and insinuations," Meloni wrote on social media. "Today, with what was clear emerging – that the government had absolutely nothing to do with it – the Democratic Party secretary even goes so far as to deny her own words, claiming she never made any connection. Words have weight. Allusions too."

Meloni concluded by stating that those who chose to cast shadows on the government and Italy, even before an international audience, should not deny the obvious today. "They should simply apologize," she demanded.
