Riace Mayor Lucano: Governing is difficult like this. I will propose a vote to citizens

Mimmo Lucano, the mayor of Riace, finds himself in a precarious position, temporarily resuming his duties while awaiting a final verdict on his disqualification. A recent ruling by the Court of Appeals in Reggio Calabria allows him to lead the municipality again, but the ultimate decision rests with the Court of Cassation regarding his 18-month sentence for ideological falsehood.

Lucano stated that governing with such a "sword of Damocles" hanging over him compromises his ability to make choices and meet the community's expectations. He emphasized that his concerns extend beyond himself to the entire community. Despite the legal challenges, he expressed no bitterness towards the judges, stating he has always accepted decisions with serenity.

Reflecting on his journey, Lucano recalled his involvement with migrants beginning in 1998, guided by humanitarian and Christian values. He plans to convene a public assembly to discuss the future of Riace, acknowledging that the current legislative term is strained by internal divisions. He suggested that new elections might be necessary to allow the community to move forward.

His primary concerns remain focused on migrants and integration, noting the increasingly polarized discourse surrounding the issue. He drew a parallel between rejecting those fleeing war and atrocity and rejecting God. Regarding the case of Ilaria Salis, who was ordered to pay 300,000 euros to two former collaborators, Lucano expressed his belief that workers should not be dismissed in such a manner but maintained confidence in Salis's commitment to defending rights.
