Memorial Site for Actor Péter Scherer Proposed for Margaret Island

A proposal to create a memorial site for the late Hungarian actor Péter Scherer on Margaret Island is currently under consideration by the Budapest Municipal Assembly. Before his passing, Scherer shared on social media his affection for two special plane trees on Margaret Island. He noted that these trees reminded him of the ancient Greek myth of Philemon and Baucis, a story where the gods transformed an elderly, hospitable couple into intertwined trees as a reward for their pure-hearted kindness. This personal association has imbued the location with a unique cultural and symbolic meaning.

If the resolution is adopted by the Municipal Assembly, Margaret Island would gain a new memorial site.
