Mendonça authorized PF to monitor Jaques Wagner's cell phone movements after suspicion of leak

Brazil's Supreme Court Justice André Mendonça has granted the Federal Police permission to monitor the cell phone movements of former government leader in the Senate, Jaques Wagner. This decision comes amid suspicions that Wagner may have leaked details of a Federal Police operation targeting him. The investigation is reportedly looking into allegations of bribes paid by Banco Master to Wagner, which allegedly include the purchase of a R$2.5 million apartment. Authorities noted suspicious interactions between Wagner and the bank's owner, Daniel Vorcaro. Mendonça's authorization for cell phone monitoring came after a request for an audience that he deemed suspicious, occurring on the same day the Federal Police filed their request for the operation against Wagner. Wagner was a target of searches and seizures in a previous phase of the 'Compliance Zero' operation. The Federal Police sought cell phone antenna monitoring out of concern that overt field surveillance could alert Wagner and lead to the destruction of evidence or evasion. Justice Mendonça cited the risk of premature exposure of the investigation, which could allow for the exchange of devices, destruction of digital evidence, or coordination of testimonies.
