Mendonça Requests Prosecutor-General's Opinion on 'Dark Horse' Case Investigation

Brazil's Supreme Court Justice André Mendonça has formally requested the Prosecutor-General's Office (PGR) to provide an opinion on a potential investigation into the film 'Dark Horse.' The movie, which chronicles the life of former President Jair Bolsonaro, is reportedly financed by Daniel Vorcaro, an ex-banker and owner of Master.

The request was sent to Prosecutor-General Paulo Gonet, who will now assess whether there is enough evidence to initiate a formal inquiry into the alleged financial transfers. This development follows a decision by Supreme Court President Edson Fachin, who assigned the investigation request to Mendonça, citing its connection to other ongoing cases related to Master's financial irregularities, for which Mendonça is the rapporteur.

The investigation was prompted by an audio recording published by The Intercept Brasil, in which Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, a presidential hopeful, allegedly discusses funding for the film with Vorcaro. Initially, the request was directed to Justice Alexandre de Moraes, as Senator Lindbergh Farias, who filed the request, suggested the funds might have been linked to Eduardo Bolsonaro's stay in the United States, a case already under Moraes's purview. However, Fachin consolidated the matter under Mendonça to centralize all aspects of suspicious payments made by Vorcaro. The ex-banker is currently in preventive detention.

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro has denied any wrongdoing, stating that his discussions with Vorcaro were solely to secure resources for the film and that he omitted this information from allies due to a confidentiality clause in the contract. There is no set deadline for Gonet to submit his opinion to Mendonça.
