Mental Images | Kokoomus is Once Again Seen as the Most Arrogant Party

A recent party barometer, analyzed by Helsingin Sanomat, offers a revealing snapshot of Finnish public opinion regarding the nation's political parties. The study, commissioned by the six largest parties, measures citizens' perceptions and provides crucial insights into their current standing and potential future support.

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) emerges with the strongest overall image, consistently associated with trustworthiness, a people-centric approach, and the promotion of the nation's overall interests. However, the barometer also notes a perceived lack of clarity in the SDP's platform, with a segment of the public finding its leaders less than adept. This nuanced view suggests that while the party resonates on core values, its strategic communication or policy articulation might be areas for improvement.

Conversely, the National Coalition Party (Kokoomus), led by Petteri Orpo, faces a challenging assessment. A significant 55% of Finns perceive Kokoomus as arrogant, a label that has historically clung to the party. This perception is directly linked to a 49% decline in trust among respondents, including a notable 9% of those who identify as party supporters. Despite this, Kokoomus still garnishes positive associations related to security, reform capacity, and advocating for the national interest, indicating a persistent, albeit challenged, appeal.

The barometer also highlights significant shifts for other parties. The Left Alliance has made the most substantial gains in public perception, moving from the bottom of the rankings last autumn to second place in overall image. In stark contrast, the Green Party's overall image is the weakest among the major parties. Meanwhile, the Centre Party, often perceived as humble, scores lowest in leadership charisma but highest in perceived competence, though it struggles with clarity and honesty in its messaging. The Finns Party is seen as having the clearest platform alongside the Left Alliance, with 30% of respondents viewing their objectives as clearly stated.
