Merchant accused of killing teen during robbery attempt granted house arrest in Mar del Plata

A merchant in Mar del Plata, Argentina, has been placed under house arrest following a fatal confrontation during an alleged robbery attempt. Ulises Cristiano, who had been detained since August 16, was released to home confinement after a hearing on Monday, just days after the incident.

Cristiano claims that he fired shots in self-defense when a group, including the 16-year-old victim, attempted to steal his van. He had reportedly parked the vehicle to guard his business, which had suffered a burglary just hours earlier. The van was reportedly damaged during the attempted theft.

His legal team had requested his release, arguing for self-defense. The judge granted house arrest, and a monitoring mechanism along with a security detail will be implemented, given rumors of potential revenge threats against Cristiano or his business. Supporters, including family and friends, gathered outside the courthouse, celebrating the decision with applause and relief.

Cristiano's lawyers, Ibar Sallaz and Gonzalo La Mensa, expressed confidence that further evidence, including security camera footage, will support their claim of legitimate self-defense, potentially leading to his full release. The incident occurred early on August 15 in an area with numerous businesses. Security footage reportedly shows two individuals forcing open the store's security shutter and stealing a cash register before the confrontation.
