Merida celebrates 10 years of rescuing animals with a charity festival

The animal welfare organization Merida is celebrating a decade of dedicated service to abandoned animals in Croatia. Despite facing financial challenges due to the rising cost of living, the organization remains committed to its mission, fueled by a growing number of young volunteers. Their upcoming "Festival of Paws and Hearts" in June aims to increase the visibility of the cats and dogs under their care, with the ultimate goal of finding them loving homes.

Our treasure is young volunteers, and we need more animals.

Merida's president, Koraljka Kociančić, highlighted the recent influx of pregnant dogs and their puppies, recounting harrowing rescues from dire conditions. These include a mother dog named Milka who gave birth to 13 puppies, and another case where three dogs and two cats were found chained in a yard after their owner's death. The organization emphasizes its focus on helping vulnerable animals, particularly expectant mothers and those who have been injured or abused.

We are always busy, and the last year is also special because we feel that people are living worse. We struggle with finances, but we always try to follow the path of self-sufficiency.

Kociančić also noted the significant reliance on public goodwill for foster care, as Merida lacks its own shelter. This often leads to the need for paid boarding, contributing to a growing debt. The organization appeals for continued support from citizens, stressing that veterinary care and treatment are costly and time-consuming. The presence of young volunteers is seen as a vital asset, ensuring the continuation of their compassionate work.
