Meridian Store Marks 100 Years as Taveuni Icon

The Meridian Store, a landmark on Fiji's Taveuni Island, has reached its centennial milestone. President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu lauded the store during its anniversary celebration, describing it as an iconic feature of the "Garden Island." He placed it alongside natural wonders like the island's rainforests, waterfalls, and coral reefs, and even the International Date Line.

"Without the Meridian Store, you really haven’t explored fully what the community offers," the President stated, emphasizing that no visit to Taveuni is complete without experiencing the historic business. He noted that the store's survival and growth over a century reflect not just business acumen but its profound integration into the community.

Founded in 1926 by Dayaram Fakir, an immigrant from Gujarat, India, the Meridian Store began as a modest general merchant. It supplied essential goods such as rice, flour, kerosene, soap, clothing, and hardware to communities across Taveuni. Over the decades, while other island industries and businesses have emerged and faded, Meridian Store has maintained a consistent presence.

The store has adapted to changing times while continuing to serve multiple generations of families. It remains an integral part of Taveuni's social and economic history, a testament to its enduring legacy on the remote island.
