Messi fined for striking opponent during MLS match

Lionel Messi has been fined by Major League Soccer's Disciplinary Committee following an incident during a match between Inter Miami and Philadelphia Union, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

The confrontation occurred late in the tense game when Messi engaged in a heated verbal exchange with Philadelphia Union player Quinn Sullivan. The situation escalated, leading Messi to strike Sullivan across the face. The referee, who was not in a position to see the physical contact, did not issue a penalty during the game but intervened to separate the players.

Following a review of the incident, MLS announced the financial sanction against the Inter Miami star. The league stated in an official release, "The Disciplinary Committee has fined Inter Miami CF forward Lionel Messi an undisclosed amount for violating the League's policy regarding hands to the face/head of an opponent."

The match itself was marked by further tension, including another conflict in the penalty area during stoppage time. This led to the expulsion of two players: Cavan Sullivan, Quinn's brother, and Inter Miami midfielder Yannick Bright. The result did little to help Inter Miami, who are experiencing a poor run of form, extending their winless streak to four games and falling seven points behind Eastern Conference leaders Nashville.
