Messi entered the game with Argentina already leading, following an early goal from Valentin Barco. Iceland had an early opportunity to take the lead but failed to convert. Argentina's experimental lineup, featuring players like Julian Alvarez, Enzo Fernandez, and Alexis Mac Allister initially on the bench, faced some challenges, with Nico Paz missing a significant chance before halftime.

Fernandez and Mac Allister were among five substitutions made at the break. Lautaro Martinez also had opportunities in the second half, hitting the post twice. The crowd of 88,000 spectators had to wait until the final 20 minutes to see Messi, who is set to play in his sixth World Cup. His brief but impactful appearance has quelled worries about his readiness for Argentina's opening match against Algeria on June 16.

Argentina will also face Austria and Jordan in Group J of the tournament. Messi's goal, coming shortly after his introduction, capped off a performance that demonstrated his readiness to lead the defending World Cup champions into the competition.
