Messinia: Three face court over arsons, extortion of farmers

Three men, including a firefighter and a local community president, appeared in court in Kalamata, Greece, facing serious charges related to a series of arsons and extortion. The suspects were brought before an investigating judge following a months-long investigation by the Arson Crimes Response Directorate (DAEE).

Investigators accuse the trio of intentionally setting seven fires in forest and agricultural areas in 2024 and 2025. The investigation, which began nearly two years ago after an initial complaint, also involves charges of extortion, property damage, and theft. Authorities are exploring the possibility that the suspects are linked to other fires in the wider Vlachopoulos and Metamorfosi regions over recent years.

According to information, the accused allegedly exploited their control over irrigation water management in the area. They are said to have demanded money from farmers for water supply to their crops. Those who refused allegedly faced threats, arson attacks, and the destruction or theft of farming equipment. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities also examining the suspects' potential involvement in illegally collecting agricultural subsidies by leasing and declaring farmland.

The suspects, identified as a five-year conscript firefighter, a local community president, and his brother, were escorted by DAEE officials to the courthouse. The case underscores a complex criminal operation allegedly involving arson, extortion, and exploitation of agricultural resources in the Messinia region.
