Meta reaches multi-billion dollar settlement with states over child addiction lawsuit

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has agreed to a significant settlement with numerous U.S. states regarding allegations that its social media platforms contribute to addiction among children and adolescents. The tech giant will pay a maximum of nearly $16.7 billion, equivalent to about 107 billion Danish kroner, as part of the resolution detailed in court documents.

The lawsuit, brought forth by 29 states, accused Meta of deliberately designing its products to make young users dependent and to collect their data. California, the most populous state, is set to receive $2.2 billion from the settlement, according to Reuters. Meta, which boasts approximately three billion users worldwide across its services, has maintained its denial of any wrongdoing in connection with the case.

As part of the settlement terms, Meta is required to implement several new measures aimed at protecting young users. These initiatives include the development and deployment of enhanced tools designed to assist parents in safeguarding their children's online activities. The agreement aims to address concerns about the mental health and data privacy of minors on Meta's platforms.
