Metal bolts protrude from Zagreb road as drivers warn: ‘It’s fine until someone gets hurt’

A damaged speed bump near Zagreb’s Hipodrom has left tall metal bolts and sharp metal profiles sticking several centimetres above the road, prompting angry complaints from drivers.

Today marks a full seven days since this was first reported to us. For seven full days, hundreds and hundreds of cars have been passing over this speed bump for hours.

The Halo, inspektore platform said the hazard on Jozsefa Antala Street had remained for seven days. Hundreds of cars reportedly continued to pass over the damaged bump, along with Zagreb public transport buses, Zrinjevac workers and municipal and traffic officers.

The platform said the exposed metal could tear a car tyre, damage suspension or cause a serious crash involving motorcyclists. It called on Zagreb Roads to repair the speed bump urgently. The city has about 1,500 such traffic-calming devices, according to the platform.

They know how to charge for every violation, but they do not know how to repair or remove these deadly remnants of a damaged speed bump.

Drivers quoted in the post accused authorities of enforcing traffic penalties while failing to repair or remove what they called dangerous remnants of the damaged bump. “It’s fine until someone gets hurt,” one complaint said. Večernji list sent a request for comment to Zagreb Roads and said it would publish the response after receiving it.
