Protest planned as opposition grows to new road through Zagreb’s Novi Zagreb

Opposition is growing in Zagreb’s Trnsko and Siget neighborhoods to a planned road that residents say would take away a large part of their favorite green space.

The project, discussed since the 1960s, moved closer to construction after the City of Zagreb selected a designer for one section. A petition launched after recent coverage collected more than 1,000 signatures on its first day, while residents said a major protest was being organized.

The city’s €80,000 design contract covers a roughly 500-meter stretch between extended Vatikanska and extended Horvatova streets in southern Trnsko. Residents say that decision is enough reason to oppose the wider project.

In its full planned form, the road would pass through part of Trnsko, including the southern section of Park mladena. It would connect with Radmanovačka, which links Trnsko and Siget, and with extended Vatikanska through Podbrežje. The planned road would have two lanes, be up to 20 meters wide in some sections, and include cycle and pedestrian paths, a new bus stop and additional turning lanes. A large roundabout is planned at Radmanovačka, along with an underpass toward extended Horvatova and the railway line.

Residents of Sveta Klara support the plan because they expect better connections with the rest of the city. A Trnsko resident active in the opposition said the dispute was not a fight between nature and progress, but a demand for a better quality of life.
