Meteorology warns of storms with 80 km/h winds starting Sunday

Paraguay's Directorate of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) has issued a special bulletin forecasting intense storms, heavy rainfall, lightning, and isolated hailstorms across the country starting Sunday. The weather system is expected to move in from the south and impact 14 regions through Monday.

The forecast indicates accumulated rainfall between 20 and 50 millimeters, along with strong, moderate electrical discharges and the possibility of very localized hail. Significant wind gusts, potentially reaching or exceeding 80 km/h, are also anticipated. The DMH issued the alert at 6:00 PM on June 6, predicting the development of storm cells from Sunday afternoon that will persist throughout Monday.

The storm system will progress progressively through both the Oriental and Occidental regions. On Sunday afternoon, the storms will initially affect the departments of Ñeembucú and Misiones. By Sunday night, the system is expected to spread to Itapúa, Caazapá, and Paraguarí, also crossing into the Chaco region to impact Presidente Hayes and Boquerón.

The forecast details accumulated water between 20 and 50 millimeters, strong moderate electrical discharges and the probability of very localized hail. Wind gusts are also expected, which could reach or exceed 80 km/h.

During the early hours of Monday, the weather disturbance will move towards Guairá, Cordillera, Central, and the capital city, Asunción. Later on Monday morning, the adverse weather will shift to Caaguazú and San Pedro. By Monday afternoon, the system is projected to conclude its path, affecting the department of Alto Paraná. The meteorological alert is expected to be deactivated by Monday night.

According to meteorologist Juan Gamarra of the DMH, the overall weather will be cool, with minimum temperatures ranging from 12 to 16°C and maximums between 17 to 20°C across most of the national territory.
