Meteotsunami hits Hvar as severe storm batters Croatia

A powerful storm system brought severe weather across Croatia on Tuesday, causing significant damage and unusual sea phenomena. In Istria, hail the size of walnuts battered cars and farmland, particularly affecting the Rovinj area. Two tourists sustained minor injuries in a Rovinj campsite due to falling branches. Firefighters responded to fallen branches blocking roads, while farmers anticipate substantial losses to crops like watermelons and vineyards.

The storm system then moved inland, with meteorologists warning of heavy downpours, hail, and thunderstorms. Similar severe weather was reported on the islands of Krk and Senj. The highest alert, a red warning, was issued for the Split region, anticipating intense storms between 8 p.m. and midnight, potentially arriving in waves. The coast could experience hurricane-force wind gusts exceeding 130 kilometers per hour and sudden sea level fluctuations that might flood low-lying coastal areas.

Compounding the severe weather, a meteotsunami struck the town of Stari Grad on Hvar island. Witnesses reported the sea level rising more than 1.5 meters in minutes, inundating the waterfront promenade. The sea level surged by over 30 centimeters on a coastal road, preceded by smaller fluctuations. A similar event occurred on Korčula island, where the sea level rose rapidly, nearly exposing the seabed for some boats before receding just as quickly.

Meteorologists warn of the potential for extreme rainfall, with up to 150 millimeters per hour, which could trigger flash floods, overwhelm drainage systems, and inundate underpasses and basements. Fast-moving flash floods pose a significant danger, capable of carrying vehicles and debris. Disruptions to power and communication services are also possible due to flooded substations and damaged infrastructure. Civil Protection urged citizens to monitor forecasts, secure property, and avoid unnecessary exposure to the hazardous conditions.
