DHMZ issues red alert for severe weather in Croatia; Split region faces dangerous conditions

Severe weather warnings have been issued across Croatia, with the State Hydrometeorological Institute (DHMZ) placing the Split region under a red alert, signifying extremely dangerous conditions. Residents can expect thunderstorms with gale-force winds, heavy rainfall, and hail late Sunday afternoon and into the evening.

The DHMZ noted that after morning storms brought strong winds and rain to the northern Adriatic and parts of Lika and northern Dalmatia, unstable weather is expected to continue. The conditions are conducive to severe thunderstorms, particularly in the afternoon.

Orange alerts are active for the Rijeka and Knin regions, forecasting strong thunderstorms with heavy downpours. The southernmost region, Dubrovnik, also faces an orange alert for thunderstorms until Wednesday morning. Yellow alerts have been issued for Zagreb, Karlovac, and Gospić regions.

Looking ahead, Wednesday is predicted to be mostly sunny, especially along the Adriatic coast. While the south might see some localized showers overnight, winds are expected to be light. Temperatures will range from 12-17°C inland and 19-23°C on the coast, with daytime highs between 25-30°C. The rest of the week anticipates predominantly sunny conditions on the coast, with variable clouds and scattered showers inland on Thursday, followed by clearer skies on Friday and Saturday.
