Mexican Foreign Minister and US Ambassador discuss bilateral agenda

Mexico's Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco and U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson convened for discussions on the bilateral agenda, as confirmed by Mexico's Secretariat of Foreign Affairs (SRE).

The meeting, held Tuesday, aimed to follow up on joint initiatives. The SRE highlighted that "Mexico and the United States work in a coordinated manner, based on respect for sovereignty, mutual trust, and shared responsibility."

This diplomatic engagement occurred shortly after Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum attended the 2026 World Cup final in New Jersey, an event she was invited to by U.S. President Donald Trump. During her visit, Sheinbaum commented on the "obvious" involvement of U.S. agents in the 2024 apprehension of drug lord Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada, who received a life sentence in a New York court.

Zambada, a co-founder of the Sinaloa Cartel, was sentenced to life imprisonment after pleading guilty and expressing remorse. The bilateral discussions also encompassed the third round of negotiations for the North American Free Trade Agreement (USMCA), which began Tuesday. This marks the first negotiation round since the U.S. declined to extend the agreement for another 16 years on July 1, opting instead for annual reviews until 2036.
