Mexican Grandparents Drive into Gig Economy: Over-60 Drivers Surge 64% on Ride-Sharing Apps

Retirement in Mexico is increasingly being redefined as a growing number of seniors are turning to ride-sharing apps to stay active and earn income. DiDi reported that in the first half of 2026, around 20,000 drivers over the age of 60 were active on its platform in Mexico. This marks a significant 64% increase from just two years prior, when the number stood at 12,000.

We are not just talking about older adults who occasionally turn on the app to make some trips, but about a community that maintains constant activity behind the wheel.

These older drivers are not just dabbling in the gig economy; they are deeply engaged. On average, each driver completes 180 trips per month, translating to about six services daily. This consistent activity demonstrates that they rely on these platforms for regular income and engagement, rather than occasional earnings.

Passenger feedback further highlights the quality of service provided by these experienced drivers. During the first six months of 2026, drivers over 60 achieved an average rating of 4.80 stars out of five. An analysis of 74,000 user comments revealed that "friendly" was the most frequent descriptor, alongside consistent mentions of "excellent service."

While this demographic is spread across Mexico, Mexico City and Toluca show the highest proportion of drivers over 60. This trend aligns with Mexico's demographic shifts, as the average life expectancy reached 76 years in 2026, according to INEGI. Projections indicate that by 2050, one in four people in Latin America will be over 60, underscoring the increasing importance of economic opportunities for an aging population.
