Mexican mayor's death from alleged accidental shooting under investigation

The prosecutor's office in Mexico's southern state of Guerrero is investigating the death of Huamuxtitlán mayor Daniel Méndez Flores. Local media reported that the mayor died from a self-inflicted accidental gunshot wound.

The state Public Ministry announced an investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the death. "Personnel from the Ministerial Investigation Police and Forensic Services are moving to the scene to carry out the corresponding procedures and collect the necessary evidence to clarify the events," the agency stated.

According to the version spread by local media, the mayor, a member of the opposition Citizen Movement (MC) party, accidentally injured himself while handling a firearm, which led to his death. The state coordinator for MC in Guerrero, Gaby Bernal, confirmed Méndez Flores' passing on social media, remembering him as "a man of work, of territory, committed to Huamuxtitlán, approachable, supportive, and a man of his word."

"To his family and friends, I extend my most sincere condolences and solidarity in these difficult times," Bernal added. No official cause of death has been confirmed by authorities. However, the Guerrero Prosecutor's Office has pledged to conduct an investigation "with strict adherence to the law" to clarify what happened.
