Mexicans vie for technical Emmy Awards

Víctor del Castillo and José Antonio García are the only Mexican nominees competing at tonight’s technical Emmy Awards, which honor work behind the scenes in U.S. television. The awards for on-camera performers will follow next weekend.

Del Castillo is nominated for contemporary non-prosthetic makeup, a category focused on traditional brushes and coloring rather than artificial skin applications. His nomination recognizes his work on an episode of Disney+’s All’s Fair, where he helped transform actress Sarah Paulson into protagonist Kim Kardashian.

“I’ll see how it goes,” Del Castillo tells El Universal, acknowledging the strength of the competition. He learned makeup in San Diego.

García is nominated for sound mixing for a limited series, anthology or film, for the second episode of Monstruo: La historia de Ed Gein, a series about a 20th-century murderer. “I had already been invited to work in television, but I had not been able to until now. Well, the nomination means we did something right,” he says.

The event will not be broadcast on television. Its results will instead be released through social media.
