Mexico Arrests U.S. Citizen Linked to Sinaloa Cartel Faction

Mexican authorities have apprehended Janero Van 'N', a U.S. citizen sought by Washington for drug trafficking offenses, in the Pacific coast city of Mazatlán. The arrest, announced by Mexico's Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch, directly links the American national to Los Chapitos, a prominent faction within the notorious Sinaloa Cartel.

Security forces, including the Navy, the Attorney General's Office, and the National Institute of Migration, conducted the operation. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) also provided support through international cooperation mechanisms and information exchange. Van 'N' is specifically wanted for drug trafficking activities in Michigan.

Los Chapitos, reportedly led by the sons of imprisoned cartel kingpin Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán, is one of the Sinaloa Cartel's most powerful factions. This group has been engaged in a violent internal struggle with another faction, Los Mayos, since 2024. This conflict has significantly escalated violence in the state of Sinaloa, resulting in over 3,000 homicides and prompting an increased federal military presence.

The apprehension comes at a time of considerable strain between Mexico and the United States over security and the ongoing fight against drug trafficking. Recent statements by DEA Director Terry Cole, alleging a "deadly connection" between cartels and Mexican authorities, have drawn sharp responses from Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who urged the DEA chief to focus on his agency's domestic challenges.
