Mexico City Archdiocese Investigates Priest Arrested for Pederasty

The Archdiocese of Mexico has launched an internal probe into a priest facing allegations of child sexual abuse. The priest was arrested on July 9 in the Cuauhtémoc borough of Mexico City.

Cardinal Carlos Aguiar Retes, the Primate of Mexico, has directed ecclesiastical authorities to initiate the investigation according to canon law and Vatican procedures. The Archdiocese stated it would not issue premature judgments and respects the presumption of innocence. They also requested the public refrain from sharing identifying details about the minor victim.

The Archdiocese recognizes the right that every person has to the presumption of innocence and due process. Therefore, it will avoid issuing premature judgments and, in respect for the ongoing investigations and applicable legal provisions, will refrain from revealing the identity of the priest while the competent authorities carry out the corresponding diligence.

Despite the arrest, the Archdiocese claims the Mexico City prosecutor's office (FGJCDMX) has not officially notified them. However, they expressed willingness to cooperate with civil authorities to clarify the facts and ensure justice. "While investigations proceed, precautionary measures will be taken without interfering with or replacing the actions of civil authorities," the Archdiocese communicated.

Separately, the FGJCDMX confirmed it obtained a court order to proceed with charges against Enrique “N,” identified as a priest, for aggravated pederasty against a 17-year-old girl. A judge ordered him into pre-trial detention for two months while the investigation continues. The case began on June 4, 2026, following a complaint by the victim's mother, who discovered sexually explicit conversations on her daughter's phone.
