Mexico City averages two homicides daily in first seven months of 2026

Mexico City registered an average of two intentional homicides every 24 hours during the first seven months of 2026, according to data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP). A total of 425 intentional homicide cases were recorded from January to July.

Of these crimes, 316 were committed with firearms, 52 with bladed weapons, 40 with other means, and in 17 cases, the weapon used was not specified. The Iztapalapa borough recorded the highest number of intentional homicides, with 101 investigations. Cuauhtémoc followed with 57 cases, and Gustavo A. Madero with 51. Tlalpan reported 30 cases, and Venustiano Carranza had 27. The specific borough was not identified in 10 homicide investigations.

Culpable homicide figures were similarly high, with an average of 2.2 victims per day. From January to July, 483 cases of culpable homicide were registered. Of these, 5 were committed with firearms, while the weapon or method was unspecified in 478 cases. No culpable homicides were reported with bladed weapons or in traffic accidents, according to SESNSP data.

Iztapalapa also led in reported culpable homicides with 72 cases, closely followed by Gustavo A. Madero with 71. Cuauhtémoc and Tlalpan each recorded 44 cases, while Miguel Hidalgo reported 29. The location was not specified in 41 culpable homicide cases. Additionally, 62 cases of attempted homicide were registered during the same period.
