Mexico City awards Ecobici contract to current operator 5M2 until 2036

Mexico City's public bike system, Ecobici, will continue to be operated by 5M2, S.A. de C.V. after the Secretariat of Mobility (Semovi) awarded the company a 10-year contract. The agreement, which runs until July 31, 2036, was decided through an international public tender process. Semovi stated that 5M2, S.A. de C.V., which currently operates Ecobici as part of a consortium, successfully met all technical specifications and requirements outlined in the tender. The contract officially begins on September 1, 2026. The financial scope of the contract ranges from a minimum of 978,317,477.47 pesos to a maximum of 2,445,793,693.67 pesos, including VAT. Under the terms of the contract, 5M2 must undertake preparatory work to ensure a smooth transition. Within the first month after signing, the company is required to submit its work plans, methodologies, and schedules to Semovi. Preparatory activities must also commence to guarantee the system's operational readiness. A key objective is to have 7,500 bicycles and 687 docking stations functional within the first two months of the contract's validity. Following the validation of these preparatory works by Semovi, the full integration and operation of the fleet will commence. The company will be responsible for implementing the necessary physical, technological, and operational components to ensure seamless integration of bicycles, stations, and systems. Semovi emphasized that the decision was made in strict adherence to principles of legality, transparency, impartiality, and efficiency.
