Mexico City braces for August 24 mobilizations, potential traffic disruptions

Mexico City anticipates a day of significant public activity on August 24, with numerous mobilizations and marches scheduled across several boroughs. The Secretariat of Citizen Security has identified Cuauhtémoc, Gustavo A. Madero, Coyoacán, and Iztapalapa as key areas where union members, retirees, students, and various collectives plan to gather.

Early morning protests are expected from the Independent Union of Workers of the National Monte de Piedad (SITNMP). Initially concentrating on Moneda Street in the Historic Center at 6:15 a.m., they planned to move to the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) by 9:15 a.m. to protest a labor strike and demand a return to normal operations.

Later, at 7:00 a.m., retirees from the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) are set to gather at the Zacatenco campus. Their protest will focus on withheld retirement payments and bonuses, which they claim have been outstanding since 2024. These retirees plan to march to the IPN's General Directorate at noon to continue their demands.

Other demonstrations include residents from Ecatepec, State of Mexico, who intend to form a human chain at the SCJN at 10:00 a.m. to demand a clean water supply for their municipality. Simultaneously, members of the National Independent Union of Workers of Colegio de Bachilleres (SINTCB) will hold a rally outside the Secretariat of Public Education, advocating for minimum wage compliance and protection for teachers against program changes.

The afternoon will see a concentration at the Faculty of Dentistry parking lot in University City, Coyoacán, by family and friends of a deceased law student, seeking truth and justice. They plan to proceed to the Rectorate esplanade by 2:00 p.m. Additionally, the collective Las Tonatzin is scheduled to support a court hearing at the East Men's Preventive Detention Center in Iztapalapa at 3:30 p.m.
