Mexico City Braces for Saturday Protests and Gatherings

Mexico City residents are advised to prepare for a series of demonstrations and gatherings scheduled across the capital on Saturday, August 29. The Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) has outlined several events, highlighting a diverse range of public concerns.

The "Siembra Cultura" group plans to gather at the José Saramago Reading Plaza at 9 AM. They aim to establish a dedicated space for promoting reliable information about cannabis, alongside risk reduction strategies and comprehensive user well-being.

Later in the day, at 11 AM, the Refugio Franciscano will attempt to rebuild a facility allegedly vandalized on July 19 by approximately 20 individuals. They are calling for a thorough investigation into the incident.

Simultaneously, representatives from the "Libertad para Morir" initiative will collect signatures at the National Center for the Arts for a citizen proposal titled "Assisted Dying Law for Mexico City." This initiative seeks to allow patients with advanced or incurable diseases to receive assistance for a dignified death.

Other planned events include the "Hijas de la Cannabis" collective's political-cultural event "Rituales 4:20" at Plaza Tlaxcoaque at noon, advocating for safe spaces for cannabis consumers with a gender perspective. The "Leonas en Manada" group will hold "Las vagoneras te respaldan" at Parque El Pípila, seeking to regularize their commercial activities and ensure dignified working conditions instead of criminalization.

Additionally, Plataforma 420 will conduct an itinerant signature collection and awareness campaign on cannabis rights, risk reduction workshops, and human rights discussions at multiple locations, including the Monumento a la Madre. The Frente Común Lupilla Xiu will hold its first public assembly at Casa Refugio de la Memoria Citlaltépetl at 12:30 PM to discuss progress on dialogues with government authorities. Finally, the Indigenous Community of Otomí Residents of Mexico City will meet at the National Institute of Indigenous Peoples at 2 PM for organizational efforts related to the Zapatista delegation's "Gira por la vida, capítulo México" in December, which aims to demand justice for the disappeared and an end to femicides, racism, and militarism.
