Mexico City Braces for Sunday Marches on Indigenous Peoples' Day, Other Protests

Mexico City is set to host a series of marches and demonstrations on Sunday, with a central focus on Indigenous Peoples' Day. The Movimiento de Pueblos, Comunidades y Organizaciones Indígenas is organizing a march from the Ángel de la Independencia to the Zócalo, demanding respect for the rights of indigenous peoples and the fulfillment of their demands concerning identity, culture, and self-determination. This event coincides with the International Day of Indigenous Peoples and the XII Fiesta of Indigenous Cultures, Peoples, and Original Barrios of the capital.

Beyond the indigenous rights march, the city will see activity from various other groups. Neighbors in San Juan de Aragón will hold an assembly to discuss the "Eden Pilares / Eden Tlacos" project. The collective "Has Ta Encontrarte Delrin" plans to gather at the Glorieta del Ahuehuete to demand progress in the search for a missing person from Sonora and access to justice. The "Libertad Para Morir" initiative will be at Utopía Coyoacán and the Centro Nacional de las Artes to collect signatures for assisted dying legislation in the capital.

Further demonstrations include the Movimiento Plural de Maquileros protesting closure operations against video game establishments and demanding the return of seized machines. Nacionalistas Mexicanos Unidos will gather at the Zócalo to oppose mandatory telephone registration for mobile lines. The Plataforma 4:20 will conduct signature collection and risk reduction awareness in Cuauhtémoc and Benito Juárez, while the "Hijas de la Cannabis" collective hosts "Dub Morrow Land" at Plaza Tlaxcoaque to advocate for safe spaces for cannabis consumers.

Other events include a vegan picnic in Parque Bicentenario organized by Liberación Nacional MX to promote cultural exchange about veganism, and the Movimiento de Regeneración Sindical collecting signatures at the Instituto para Devolverle al Pueblo lo Robado against the general secretary of the Mexican Electricians' Union. Authorities have warned of potential traffic disruptions due to these numerous planned events throughout the day.
