Mexico City homicide figures are reliable and transparent: Brugada, highlights July with fewest homicides in 12 years

Mexico City's head of government, Clara Brugada, asserted that homicide figures in the capital are reliable and transparent, highlighting July as the month with the fewest homicides in 12 years. This indicator, she called the "most forceful" measure of security policy, signifies that the city reached its lowest homicide level for July since 2014. Brugada noted that June 2026 also saw the fewest homicides in 15 years, consolidating the downward trend. She emphasized that despite differing methodologies, both the Mexico City government's security results and INEGI data confirm a similar trend of reduction in homicides. "The city's homicide figures are reliable, transparent, verifiable, robust; according to INEGI, homicides decreased 16% between 2024 and 2025, a reduction double that shown in our records," Brugada stated. She explained the discrepancy arises because the city's investigation clarifies the motive behind all violent deaths, whereas INEGI registers deaths initially reported by the health system. "That INEGI registers a greater reduction in homicides in the city than our data shows is an important external and independent validation of the security strategy's results," she added. Brugada also highlighted other security achievements, including a 63% reduction in high-impact crimes compared to 2019, 11,594 arrests for high-impact crimes since her administration began, and a 132% increase in arrest warrants for extortion since 2024. Pablo Vázquez Camacho, the Secretary of Citizen Security, reported that since the current administration took office, 11,594 individuals have been arrested for high-impact crimes, and 44 criminal cells have been dismantled.
