Mexico City hospital residents block Avenida Cuauhtémoc, demand audit and penalties over salmonella outbreak

About 50 resident doctors from Mexico’s General Hospital, known as “Dr. Eduardo Liceaga,” demonstrated outside the facility and blocked Avenida Cuauhtémoc. They were protesting a salmonella outbreak recorded the previous week and linked to contaminated food served in the hospital dining hall.

Most of the protesters wore medical uniforms and carried signs. They called for sanctions against whoever was responsible for the infections and demanded an external audit of the dining hall’s administrators.

The residents said the administrators wanted to reopen the dining hall despite the outbreak. Deputy Health Secretary Eduardo Clark said on Friday that the evidence pointed to an egg served at breakfast on Aug. 31 as the likely cause, but stressed that laboratory results would confirm the source.
