Mexico City mandates electric vehicle registration, rejects extension

Mexico City will enforce mandatory registration for all electric personal mobility vehicles, including electric motorcycles, e-bikes, and scooters, beginning July 1. Héctor Ulises García Nieto, the city's Secretary of Mobility, confirmed that no extension for this deadline is currently planned.

No extension is contemplated as of today. We are on time, we are going to launch on July 1, even if they are tired from the World Cup celebration.

Authorities have established contact with approximately 30 manufacturers, representing 80% of the market for these vehicles. However, they plan to reach out to additional companies to ensure comprehensive registration. The process involves defining safety and technical criteria for each vehicle type and setting registration timelines.

We have relationships with about 30 companies, but it is necessary to invite more. Those 30 companies represent 80% of the manufacturers of this type of vehicle, and there is a registry called, of manufacturers and distributors of personal mobility vehicles. Those manufacturers, evidently, must also be invited; we are going to invite those who are missing.

Despite the impending deadline, some retailers in the historic center expressed unfamiliarity with the new regulations. The Secretariat is working to finalize the registration process and will soon provide details on the two types of license plates that will be issued, differentiated by vehicle weight. A call center will also be established to assist the public with any questions.

The registration is in process. We are ready to start, on July 1, as we mentioned. Some companies are missing, but they have the period until the imposition of sanctions to register, and we are going to advance at accelerated steps to achieve it.
