Mexico Deploys Special Forces to Zacatecas After Mass Homicide

Mexico's Secretariat of National Defense has deployed 100 elite special forces members to the state of Zacatecas to bolster security efforts. The deployment follows the grim discovery of 10 bodies on July 18, a crime that included the shocking sight of five victims hanging from a highway overpass. Among the deceased were a former mayor of Sombrerete, two officials from Fresnillo, and several businessmen.

The special forces contingent departed from the Military Air Base in Santa Lucía, State of Mexico, aboard a Boeing 737 transport aircraft. They have integrated with the 11th Military Zone forces already operating in the state, working in coordination with all three levels of government. This new deployment significantly increases the security presence, adding to the 400 Army and National Guard personnel who were dispatched to the region on July 19.

The primary mission of these special forces will involve ground reconnaissance and implementing deterrent measures in urban areas of Zacatecas, Guadalupe, and Fresnillo. Their operations will strictly adhere to current legal frameworks, including the National Law on the Use of Force and respect for human rights. The objective is to curtail criminal activities by locating and dismantling criminal organizations and those responsible for generating violence.
