Mexico extends lead atop Santo Domingo Games medal table

Mexico solidified its leading position at the Santo Domingo Central American and Caribbean Games, extending its dominance on the second day of competition. The Mexican delegation amassed 14 gold, 14 silver, and 10 bronze medals, totaling 38, after securing top honors in rowing, open water swimming, taekwondo, and shooting on Sunday.

In rowing, the duo of Melissa Márquez and Aylin Ibarra claimed the gold in the double scull event with a time of 07:19.85, surpassing Cuba's Rayma Ortiz and Loraidis Echavarría. Mexican swimmer Paulo Strehlke continued his success in open water, adding the 3-kilometer gold to his 10-kilometer victory from the previous day, finishing in 06:53.8.

Taekwondo saw Mexican athletes shine, with world champion Daniela Souza winning gold in the -49 kg category and Zaid Pérez taking gold in the -58 kg division. Nadia Ferreira also contributed a gold medal in the -53 kg category. Host nation Dominican Republic also celebrated success, with Wilfrido De la Cruz winning gold in taekwondo (-54 kg) and Damiano securing a judo gold.

Colombia earned gold medals in road cycling, water skiing, artistic skating, and women's water polo. Mexico's strong performance places them significantly ahead of Cuba, which has 13 medals, and Colombia, which has 17 medals but fewer golds.
