Mexico government to buy 70 tons of coffee from small producers

Mexico's federal government is launching a significant sustainable procurement initiative, committing to buy around 70 tons of coffee from cooperatives and small producers for consumption in government offices between 2026 and 2027. Raquel Buenrostro Sánchez, head of the Secretariat of Public Administration, announced the plan, emphasizing its role in fostering a new era of "democratic, transparent, and socially valuable" government purchasing.

The initiative aims to bolster the economic well-being of coffee-growing communities. "Thanks to this Framework Agreement, cooperatives will be strengthened, communities will find new development opportunities, men and women producers will receive fair pay for their work, and families will be able to improve their living conditions," Buenrostro stated.

Key government entities, including the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) and the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), are already on board to expand their coffee purchases. The program will feature various coffee types, including those produced using agroecological practices, organic varieties, and specialty roasts.

Buenrostro highlighted the program's potential to increase producer income and improve coffee quality and volume, ensuring their sustained presence in the market with better prices. "The power of public procurement generates social value, and that is what sustainable procurement is all about," she added, signaling a commitment to institutionalizing this model for future government purchases.
