Mexico monitors Mexicans in Colombia after 7.4 magnitude earthquake, reiterates support

Mexico's Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco is actively monitoring the situation of Mexican nationals in Colombia, particularly those vulnerable, after a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck the country. Velasco confirmed that President Claudia Sheinbaum has offered humanitarian aid and support to Colombia.

The Foreign Ministry's teams for Latin America and the Caribbean, along with Consular Protection, are assessing the situation of a youth futsal team from Tijuana that became stranded in Colombia due to the earthquake. "We reiterate that by order of President Claudia Sheinbaum, all our compatriots in that country have the support and backing of the Mexican government to return to our country as soon as possible," stated Velasco.

Mexico has expressed solidarity with the Colombian people during this difficult time, which has tragically resulted in 181 fatalities. Velasco has maintained direct communication with his Colombian counterpart, Omar Vula, to offer any necessary humanitarian assistance and rescue equipment. The youth team, Obeliz FC, expressed their fear and requested government help to return home to Tijuana.

The team's coaches, Juan, Adolfo, and Raúl, described their situation as "complicated" and uncertain due to travel disruptions. They were concerned about potential flight cancellations and the duration of their stay. The government of Baja California has since contacted the team, and they are reportedly traveling from Armenia to Bogotá, hoping to secure flights back to Mexico.
