Mexico Recovers Over $5 Million in Weinberg, García Luna Case, Sheinbaum Announces

President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the Mexican federal government has successfully recovered over $5 million related to the Weinberg case, which involves former Security Secretary Genaro García Luna. Sheinbaum stated that the head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF), Omar Reyes Colmenares, will detail the recovery process during an upcoming press conference.

"Tomorrow's morning conference will be good because more than $5 million from the Weinbergs, from the García Luna case, have already been recovered. And tomorrow the head of the UIF will come to explain how they were recovered, so it will be good," Sheinbaum briefly commented.

The Weinberg group consists of Mauricio Samuel Weinberg López and Jonathan Alexis Weinberg Pinto, known associates and fronts for Genaro García Luna. This recovery is part of a larger effort to reclaim funds linked to illicit activities. In May, the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP), through the UIF, reported that a Florida court had issued a ruling in favor of the Mexican state for $578.5 million in a civil proceeding concerning an illicit public contracting scheme connected to García Luna.

These recent recoveries add to previous judgments obtained in May 2025 against García Luna and his spouse, totaling over $2.4 billion. With these combined amounts, the total sum ordered in favor of the Mexican state for this scheme now exceeds $3.06 billion, according to the Ministry of Finance. The UIF's explanation of the recovery process is anticipated to shed light on the mechanisms used to reclaim these assets.
