Mexico's ex-prosecutor general's wealth sparks controversy: ten houses, two Rolls Royces declared

Alejandro Gertz Manero, Mexico's former Attorney General and current ambassador to the United Kingdom, has revealed a substantial personal fortune, including ten houses, an apartment, land, an entire building, and a collection of jewelry valued at $1 million. This disclosure comes from his recently published asset declaration, made public as required by his role within the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

His declared assets also encompass seven vehicles, notably two Rolls Royces, and artworks worth $450,000. Gertz Manero also holds bank accounts in Spain, Switzerland, and the United States. While he refused to disclose these details during his tenure as Attorney General, current regulations for members of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs mandate public access to such declarations via the Declaranet platform.

Among the declared properties are several inherited houses, some exceeding 1,000 square meters, an inherited building, and a U.S. property valued at over $1 million. He also purchased a property in Madrid's exclusive Los Jerónimos neighborhood over a decade ago. Media reports indicate that the declaration includes assets solely owned by Gertz Manero, excluding any jointly held properties.

Gertz Manero's time leading the Attorney General's Office from 2019 to late 2025 was marked by controversy. Critics cited a lack of results in prosecuting cases, frequent absences from public view, and a general lack of transparency. His tenure saw contentious decisions, including a proposal to eliminate the crime of femicide and alleged use of the prosecutor's office to pursue his brother's widow. His appointment as ambassador to the UK came in November 2025, under the current administration.
