Mexico's Finance Ministry guarantees funds for 2027 elections, reviews INE budget

Mexico's Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) has guaranteed that the National Electoral Institute (INE) will have the required budget for the 2027 midterm elections. Subsecretary of Expenditures, Bertha Gómez Castro, stated that the INE's needs are being taken into "important consideration" to ensure it can "fully fulfill this mandate."

During a press conference presenting the Report on Public Finances and Debt, Gómez Castro emphasized that, as with all government bodies, the ministry evaluates the necessities of each institution to meet its objectives. She highlighted the "very important interaction" with the INE due to 2027 being an election year.

In the case of the INE, we are taking this fact into important consideration and surely it will have the resources it requires to be able to fully fulfill this mandate.

The INE's Temporary Budget Commission has presented its preliminary budget request for next year, totaling 36.119 billion pesos. This figure represents a substantial increase compared to the 22.837 billion pesos approved for the current year, leading some legislators in the Chamber of Deputies to deem the amount disproportionate.
