Mexico’s financial intelligence unit evolves into a strategic national security arm, Omar Reyes says

Mexico’s Financial Intelligence Unit is marking 22 years by presenting itself as more than an institution that analyzes financial information. Its director, Omar Reyes Colmenares, said the unit has become a strategic component of national security.

Reyes said the transformation reflects the country’s need to respond to new challenges while protecting citizens and preserving the integrity of the financial system. The unit now has greater capacity to coordinate, generate intelligence and support operations, he said, with the aim of producing concrete results for Mexico’s security, justice and public welfare.

He made the remarks at an event unveiling a commemorative lottery ticket for the anti-money-laundering unit, which operates under the Finance Secretariat. The ticket will accompany Superior Draw No. 2897, scheduled for Friday, September 4. The National Lottery issued 2.4 million tickets, with a top prize of 17 million pesos across two series and a total prize pool of 51 million pesos.

National Lottery director Olivia Salomón said fighting corruption and money laundering also means protecting the economy, safeguarding resources and defending the honest work of millions of Mexicans. She said the Financial Intelligence Unit had built capabilities and consolidated a highly specialized team serving the country.

The commemorative tickets are circulating throughout Mexico, carrying the unit’s image and a message about the value of professional, modern institutions committed to the country.
